I’ve always fancied myself a better writer than speaker, so it’s odd for me to find myself hosting Morning Edition.  I got into journalism to exercise a reverence for language, and to come to know people through their stories.  I hope trying to channel all of that into hosting will make me pithier, because brevity is not my strong suit…

This job brings me back to public radio, after spending the hiatus working in grant administration and social services, and taking classes towards a master’s degree in teaching (which I plan to finish and utilize before my youth escapes me).  Earlier work experiences introduced me to the marketing-communications and public-relations aspects of the very agricultural industry that produced me.

(As an aside: most of the summers of my childhood were spent horseback, working as the lone softie on my family’s beef-cattle ranch in southern New Mexico.  Lessons learned there and now applied in both my professional and personal life, are far too many to name, and some too profound for words).

I cut my journalistic teeth at fellow public-radio station KRWG, while studying journalism, as well as the economics and business of agriculture, at New Mexico State University.  I tried to grow into a utility player – reporting mostly, hosting and editing some – and earned a few state Associated Press awards during my time there.  I fortified that experience with a fellowship at the Washington Center for Politics & Journalism and internship at NPR's Washington Bureau, where a particularly busy news cycle saw me handling audio.  That experience better tuned my ear for the production side of radio journalism.

I’m really happy to live in Colorado – and I hope that what little I know about water skiing will translate on the slopes.

I’ll look forward to hearing from you – or, even better, actually meeting you!
