West Nile Cases Still Climbing As Temperatures Drop

Summer may be long gone, but cases of West Nile virus are still popping up – making this year's outbreak the worst so far in the U.S. since 2003.

New tallies released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention bring the total case count for the year to 5,054, and the death toll to 228 — more than the past four years combined.

The mosquito-borne virus has struck some states harder than others.

The numbers for West Nile virus cases continue to rise, up 35 percent in the last week. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is confident the nation has turned the corner on its worst-ever epidemic of West Nile virus disease.

"Based on historical data, in most of the country the epidemic probably peaked around the end of August," the CDC's Lyle Petersen told reporters in a teleconference Wednesday.

This year is on track to be the worst ever for West Nile virus in the United States. Here are the latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

1,590 reported cases, nearly 500 more than a week ago for a rise of 44 percent.

889 cases, or 56 percent, involve severe neurological disease.

66 deaths, compared to 41 last week.

Every state except Alaska and Hawaii has reported West Nile virus in people, birds or mosquitoes.
