Korva Coleman

In her work as an NPR newscaster, Korva Coleman is responsible for writing, producing, and delivering national newscasts for NPR's newsmagazines All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and Weekend Edition. She is also a substitute host for Talk of the Nation, Weekend All Things Considered, and Weekend Edition Sunday with Liane Hansen.

Before joining NPR in March 1990, Coleman was a staff reporter and copy editor for the Washington Afro-American newspaper. She also produced and hosted First Edition, an overnight news program at NPR's member station WAMU-FM/Washington, DC.

Originally from Arizona, Coleman worked in commercial radio as news and public affairs directors at stations in Phoenix and Tucson. Her awards include Arizona Associated Press Awards for best radio newscast, editorial, and short feature. She was also nominated for Outstanding Young Woman of America in 1983.

Coleman earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Howard University in 1989 and studied law at Georgetown University Law Center from 1989 to 1990.

New Zealand Lawmakers Pass Same-Sex Marriage Law

By a vote of 77 to 44, lawmakers in New Zealand have passed a new law permitting same-sex marriage. The bill was adopted after its third reading and is to take effect in August, according to the New Zealand Herald.

Minor Quakes Shake Oklahoma Overnight

Five earthquakes rocked central Oklahoma early today, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The most powerful tremor struck at about 2:00, central time this morning, northeast of Luther. That's a little less than 30 miles northeast of Oklahoma City. The quake's magnitude was 4.2. Other tremors had magnitudes between 2.8 and 4.2.

Six Years After Shooting, Virginia Tech Remembers

With so much attention given to the violent bombings in Boston, Virginia Tech is remembering a terrible tragedy of its own today. It's been six years since shooter Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people and injured 17 on the Virginia Tech campus, and then shot himself to death. Today, his victims are being remembered in a series of events.
