West Texas fiddler and singer Amanda Shires is a storyteller. She was playing fiddle for the Texas Playboys at 15, then later backed Gwyneth Paltrow in the film Country Strong and gigged with Drive-By Truckers, Jason Isbell and Justin Townes Earle. While those are impressive accomplishments, what's truly compelling is the nuanced and charming world Shires builds on her recent album Carrying Lightning.

With her enchanting vibrato and stark, eloquent phrasing, Shires explores many sides of love: discovering it, losing it, finding yourself in lust. Citing Leonard Cohen and Richard Buckner as influences, Shires creates something simple and delightfully heartfelt on Carrying Lightning. Here, Shires performs songs from her new album on World Cafe.
