Ariz. Medicaid Recipients Could Be Hit With New Fee

RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

The governor of Arizona is proposing a $50 fee on some Medicaid recipients in her state, specifically, some obese people who don't follow their doctor's weight loss plan and some who smoke. An official with the state's Medicaid system told the Associated Press, you need to be responsible for the fact that your smoking costs us more. The fee would help raise funds and is part of a broader effort to overhaul the state's Medicaid system. Also in the proposal outlined by Governor Jan Brewer: restoring Medicaid funds for transplants.
