Christian Pakistani Cabinet Minister Killed By Gunmen

STEVE INSKEEP, Host:

We've been following that turmoil throughout the morning, and we're also following a dramatic development in Pakistan. You may recall that early this year a man killed the governor of Pakistan's largest province. The governor had spoken out against a blasphemy law and what he considered the persecution of a Christian woman.

RENEE MONTAGNE, Host:

Now a member of the government's cabinet has been killed. Shahbaz Bhatti was the minister for minorities. He too opposed the blasphemy law and he was the only Christian member of the cabinet. A photo in Britain's Guardian Newspaper shows him holding a cross.

INSKEEP: Today, according to police, gunmen were waiting outside his home. They opened fire and killed Shahbaz Bhatti as his car pulled out of the driveway.
