Colorado Democrats Make Another Push For Lower Immigrant Tuition

Colorado college students who are not eligible for in-state tuition because they are undocumented immigrants will rally at the state Capitol Tuesday.

They’ll join with Democrats in support of an expanded proposal to allow them to pay lower tuition while they seek citizenship.

The legislation goes further than last year’s bill, in which Democrats proposed a compromise tuition that was higher than in-state tuition but lower than out-of-state tuition. It was defeated in the Republican-controlled House.

Following that defeat, Metro State University caused a bit of an uproar when officials announced plans to move forward with their own compromise tuition policy.

The expanded proposal being introduced Tuesday would allow undocumented immigrants to pay in-state tuition. With Democrats in control of both chambers of the legislature, the measure stands a good chance this year.
