Colorado Hopes For Economic Benefit From Tokyo Flight

Denver International Airport

The first nonstop flight from Denver to Tokyo takes off from Denver International Airport Monday afternoon.

Economic development officials say the United Airlines flight to Japan’s capital will boost the state's economy by $130 million annually through increased tourism and trade. DIA Aviation Manager Kim Day says Denver has been working since 1986to begin the flights.

The state of Colorado is spending about $55,000 to send five officials on the inaugural trip to Tokyo. They include Denver Mayor Michael Hancock and state tourism director Al White, as well as officials from the Governor’s office and the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade.

A delegation of about 70 leaders in education and business are taking the flight over the next two days. The Boeing Dreamliner 787 should reach Tokyo’s Narita Airport in 11 hours.

As the host of KUNC’s new program and podcast In the NoCo, I work closely with our producers and reporters to bring context and diverse perspectives to the important issues of the day. Northern Colorado is such a diverse and growing region, brimming with history, culture, music, education, civic engagement, and amazing outdoor recreation. I love finding the stories and voices that reflect what makes NoCo such an extraordinary place to live.
