Identity theft continues to be the number one consumer fraud complaint in the nation and Colorado a hot spot for that fraudulent activity.

Colorado ranks number one for all consumer fraud complaints and eleventh in the nation for identity theft. That’s according to 2010 numbers compiled by the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Sentinel Network. Four northern Colorado communities fall within the top ten cities nationwide reporting fraud. Based on the number of complaints per 100,000 people Greeley ranks number two, Boulder is fourth and the Ft. Collins-Loveland area is tenth.

21,012 fraud complaints were filed in Colorado last year. Topping the list are debt collection and imposter scams followed by internet services and shop at home and catalog sales.
