The Boulder County Sheriff's department proposed locking up AR-15s inside Niwot High School and Lyons Middle/Senior High School so that the school resource officers could get to them quickly if needed. But after recent community meetings and gathering feedback from students, the school board decided to drop the proposal.

At a school board meeting this week, superintendent Don Haddad explained that the district is bringing on more School Resource Officers as well as additional mental health services.

"So we've taken some of the suggestions to heart and we feel like we've landed in a very positive place with that," Haddad said.

These discussions around storing guns in schools came up partly in response to the Parkland school shooting in Florida earlier this year.
