Congressman Resumes Government in the Grocery Meetings

Creative Commons

For the first time since the shooting rampage that left Arizona Congresswoman Gabriele Giffords critically wounded, Colorado Congressman Ed Perlumtter will resume his Government in the Grocery meetings.

Perlmutter put his bi-monthly gatherings on hold after the shootings. But after meeting with area grocery stores and law enforcement the Seventh District Democrat is ready to move forward. Spokeswoman Leslie Oliver says Perlmutter stands by the program and the opportunity to meet one on one with his constituents.

“Some people come specifically because they know Ed is going to be at the grocery store. A lot of other cases are – people are just doing their weekly grocery shopping and happen to see him and stop by and talk to them about whatever is on their minds,” says Oliver.

The director of Safeway’s Public Affairs Department, Kris Staff, says the grocery chain has evaluated their policy surrounding the program and feels confident about it continuing. Perlmutter has hosted more than 70 of these meetings since taking office in 2007. Saturday’s meeting in Lakewood is from 10 am to noon.
