From the Desk of President Neil Best: July 2012

Dear Friends,

Thanks to all of you who read these monthly musings and a special note of appreciation to those of you who share your thoughts and concerns in response.

This past month has been a challenge for numerous people with Colorado’s many active fires. The entire experience for all us has demonstrated the power of good found in community. For us at KUNC, we are so appreciative of your understanding and support during our early June power outage that resulted from the High Park Fire. Here are some of my takeaways from the past month.

We are increasingly living in a digital world. In the first week of the High Park Fire KUNC experienced a 1500% increase in unique visits for the weekend to KUNC.org. KUNC is no longer just a radio station, but evolving and becoming a multi-platform content provider.

The fire coverage itself is a demonstration of the value of public media working together. The KUNC staff, working together with colleagues in Denver and Colorado Springs, has provided a greater quality and quantity of coverage during this critical time.

Finally, while we have worked hard over the years to create redundant systems to ensure we stay on-air, the experience of the High Park Fire demonstrates we have more work to do. We will be working to ensure a continuous power supply will always be available at our Buckhorn Mountain transmission site.

Warm Regards,

Neil
