From the Desk of President Neil Best: October 2012

Dear Friends,

Over the course of the past several months members of the staff, Community Advisory Panel, and the Community Radio for Northern Colorado Board of Directors have been working on the future and how we best serve you.

The end result is the adoption by the Board of Directors of a new strategic plan for the organization.

In some circles, the use of the phrase strategic plan will lead to the rolling of eyes. For KUNC the process has proven to be of great value over the last decade. We have gone through the process three times here at the station. I can say with certainty that each process has moved us forward as an organization.

What are the results you ask? Let me share the outcomes that we believe will move forward our service to you and the broader community. Our strategy to advance our service is focused on three imperatives.

  • Content: Increase originated multi-platform content while maintaining/growing audience.
  • Community Engagement: Enhance and encourage community engagement.
  • Resource Management: Manage Resources to ensure long term sustainability of KUNC.

A straightforward list of goals found within essentially three simple statements. The devil, as they say, is found in the details.

Clearly our purpose is to provide content (programming) that you and other members of the community will find of value. The first imperative is a reminder of the critical importance to continually develop content of value. It is also an acknowledgment of the demand of the community to be able access content using new and improved technologies.

The word broadcast comes from the vision of Johnny Appleseed throwing out seeds to start trees. Radio has traditionally focused on delivering content on one direction, casting out audio from broadcast towers to the audience. Technology necessitates a change. More than ever we need to devise ways to hear from the audience and engage on multiple levels with the community. Bluntly, we need to be more of a community with you.

Finally, it takes significant resources to do what we do at KUNC. We continue our efforts to manage resources in ways that ensures our continued service and limits the dependency upon how well the last on-air membership drive went.

Three simple, direct imperatives, but as you can see with many layers of complexity. But I believe three imperatives will move us forward in our service to the community.

Warm Regards,

Neil
