Despite recent rain for Colorado’s Front Range and snow in the mountains, a new report finds the worst drought in decades isn’t ready to release its grip on the nation.
"If anyone thinks the drought of 2012 is over they are, unfortunately, mistaken," says U.S. Department of Agriculture meteorologist Brad Rippey. He says based on the newest data from the U.S. Drought Monitor, the amount of land experiencing some form of drought inched up slightly from last week from 64.8 percent to 65.5 percent.
"And that is a new U.S. Drought Monitor record," adds Rippey. This week’s report [.pdf]also shows the portion of the country in the worst forms of drought – extreme or exceptional – is up slightly to 21.5 percent.
