  • Education author Jamie Vollmer discusses why America's schools need to change, and why community engagement is essential to the process.

Many people believe that American schools are failing, but there’s very little consensus on why – or how to fix the problem.

Enter author, attorney and former business executive Jamie Vollmer, who says an entirely new approach is needed. He spoke with KUNC’s Erin O’Toole while on a tour of 19 states, meeting with groups of educators and business leaders about the essential relationship between schools and their communities.

Vollmer says the problem begins with a severely outdated educational model that Thomas Jefferson developed more than 200 years ago.

"We have a school system that was designed for an agri-industrial economy that no longer exists."

Jamie Vollmer is the author of Schools Cannot Do it Alone and The Blueberry Story. He’s meeting with educators from Greeley-Evans District 6 Wednesday morning; then hosts a public forum with community and business leaders at a noon luncheon at Greeley’s Island Grove Events Center.
