Greeks Fed Up With Ineffective Austerity Measures

STEVE INSKEEP, Host:

Unidentified Man: (Foreign language spoken)

JOANNA KAKISSIS: Georgia Nikopoulou says the protest has given many despairing Greeks some hope. She's a 28-year-old marine biologist who speaks four languages, but can only find work at a shop. Because business is bad, she says she hasn't gotten paid since January. Many of her friends have given up, she says.

GEORGIA NIKOPOULOU: Most of them have left the country because there's no future for us here.

KAKISSIS: For NPR News, I'm Joanna Kakissis in Athens. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.

Joanna Kakissis is a foreign correspondent based in Kyiv, Ukraine, where she reports poignant stories of a conflict that has upended millions of lives, affected global energy and food supplies and pitted NATO against Russia.
