Inner Tubes, Small Rafts Allowed Back on Poudre River

As sweltering temperatures continue along the Front Range, Larimer County authorities have lifted restrictions barring the use of inner tubes on the Poudre River.

Sheriff Justin Smith removed the partial-use restriction imposed June 10th.  The restriction prohibited the use of air mattresses, inner tubes and single-chambered rafts.  But officials still advise restraint when enjoying water activities.

“The Sheriff warns that the river will continue to run pretty high and fast for some time, particularly with the rains we’ve been having lately,” says John Schulz, Public Information Officer with the Larimer County Sheriff’s office.  “So recreationists are urged to use extreme caution, and to be sure to have all the necessary safety equipment when using the river.”

The restrictions on the Poudre were imposed after at least one death and a number of rescues were required earlier this year.  Schulz advises using caution near the river too, since fast-flowing water can cause the river banks to become unstable.  The city of Fort Collins Parks and Natural Areas have also lifted their river access closure, effective Tuesday.
