For the third year in a row, the Radio Television Digital News Association has recognized the KUNC newsroom with a national Edward R. Murrow Award for excellence in broadcast journalism.
Reporter Grace Hood won in the Investigative Category for a report examining a for-profit company that oversees the day-to-day operations at the state’s largest public online school. State oversight, academic results and use of taxpayer money at the state’s full-time online schools were also looked at. The report was automatically entered into the national contest after it won a regional Murrow award in April. It was also recognized with a first place award by the Colorado Associated Press Broadcasters Association this year.
Hood received a national Murrow in the Investigative Category for a story she co-reported with Michael De Yoanna in 2010 and in the Feature Category in 2009. KUNC was the only radio station in Region 3 (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming) to win a national award.
The RTDNA has been honoring outstanding achievements in journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Murrow Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the broadcast news profession.
The KUNC news department has received 11 awards of excellence for work produced in 2011 including Best Single Event News coverage from the Colorado Broadcasters Association and 6 regional Edward R. Murrow awards.
