KUNC's Colorado Edition: Rocky Mountain 'Tick Orgies,' Dirty Air And Mariachi

Rae Ellen Bichell

Mountain West News Bureau

It's that kind of week.

On this week's Colorado Edition, we hit the highs, the lows and a few places in between.

First, we talk tariffs. The Trump administration has been kind of coy on whether it will – or whether it won’t - impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico, and countries in the European Union so we hear from one Colorado steel company that's feeling the pinch.

As part of a series this week on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP, Esther Honig exploresthe dilemma facing unauthorized immigrants. Federal food benefit programs are vital for low-income immigrant families, but if someone in the household isn’t authorized to live in the U.S., the family may not enroll due to the risk of deportation.

StoryCorps has parked the MobileBooth in Fort Collins. We bring you one of those stories, of love, loss and moving forward. Have your tissues handy.

Next, Kyra Buckley tells us about Colorado's air quality. Colorado has a well deserved reputation for being a great place to spend time outdoors. This year’s air quality report from the American Lung Association dings that status just a little bit. Denver is the 14th most-polluted city in the nation.

In other outdoor danger news, we hear from the very brave Rae Ellen Bichell who ventured into the Rocky Mountains with a couple of tick scientists as they collect bugs to find out what rare but nasty viruses they could be carrying.

In our weekly film review, Howie Movshovitz says the new film "The Little Pink House" would do better if it were less self-righteous.

Finally, we go into the KUNC archives to bring you the perfect story for Cinco de Mayo: Last year, Metropolitan State University in Denver a added mariachi program. Stacy Nick checked it out.

Music this week:

  • "Remember Me" by Kalatana
  • "Cylinder Six" by Chris Zabriskie
