An in-depth look by I-News - a Colorado-based nonprofit investigative news collaborative, Education News Colorado, and KUNC at the state’s online K-12 schools. Topics include: online K-12 school performance, state- and district-level oversight, and for-profit Education Management Organizations, such as K12 Inc.

KUNC's Grace Hood Wins Daniel Schorr Journalism Prize

The Daniel Schorr Journalism Prize is awarded by WBUR and Boston University. The annual prize is named after Daniel Schorr, who gave American journalism a lifetime of commitment through his insight, intelligence and integrity.

Update 11:08 a.m. 10/16/2012: KUNC would like to once again congratulate Grace Hood for her achievement. She accepted the Daniel Schorr Journalism Prize at the WBUR Gala which was held in Boston Monday night.

The prize salutes a new generation of public radio journalists 35 and under, seeking to inspire them to stretch the boundaries of the medium.

KUNC's Grace Hood was recognized for a series of stories examining a for-profit company that oversees the day-to-day operations at Colorado’s largest virtual K-12 school, which is taxpayer funded. State oversight and academic results at the state’s full-time online schools were also examined.

Ultimately the scope of the series has far-reaching implications that go beyond Colorado as many states debate how to operate and regulate virtual K-12 schools.

In judging the nominations, Phil Balboni, President and CEO of Global Post and founder and President of New England Cable News wrote, “This three-part series demonstrated exemplary enterprise reporting that was particularly notable for a small community station. Grace Hood showed initiative, drive and determination in pursuing a complex story which she rendered into a clear and compelling narrative.”

Hood was also awarded a 2012 National Edward R. Murrow Award by The Radio Television Digital News Association for one story in the series, “K12Inc.: Public Online Schools, Private Profits.”

Past recipients of the Daniel Schorr award include NPR’s Morning Host and Correspondent David Greene, WNYC Reporter Ailsa Chang and NPR Planet Money Reporter Chana Joffe-Walt.
