Mexican Teacher Praised For Protecting Students

RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

In Mexico, drug violence is a chronic problem in the city of Monterrey. When a gunfight erupted outside a kindergarten classroom there a few days, the teacher knew exactly how to respond. In an episode the teacher managed to videotape, she led the kids in a song about chocolate droplets falling from the sky.

MONTAGNE: That's teacher Marta Rivera Alanis, calming her students during a shootout in Monterrey, Mexico. Yesterday, the state government awarded her a prize for bravery.
