From Neil Best's Desk: Thank You For Inspiring Us

Inspiration.

If asked, many of you might have some different, choice words to describe an on-air membership drive. I understand that.

I will freely admit that I have moments of frustration when those would be my descriptors as well. But for me, the single adjective I’d use to describe on-air membership drives would be inspiration. Your membership, your commitment, your dollars provide invaluable inspiration to me and the entire staff at KUNC.

Thank you for inspiring us.

If you’re wondering where that came from, take a moment and see it from my perspective. We take a few days each year (certainly fewer than those of us on both sides of the microphone imagine it to be) and ask listeners to make voluntary contributions in support of KUNC. Unlike so many fundraising efforts, it really is an anonymous process. I can’t put my arm around you, try and stick my foot in your front door, or invite you to a dinner and pass out envelopes to everyone at the table.

We know there are thousands of ears listening when we start to say, “Good Morning, this is KUNC’s fundraiser…” and we also know there are many choices when you hear those words. There are other stations; there is an off-button. We get the picture.

When you make the conscientious choice to leave the radio on, and then make the decision to support this station, it is inspiring. It is even more inspiring knowing how many of you have been honoring our requests for years and how many are committed to sustaining memberships.

So when you hear something from KUNC that makes you think “that was really good,” remember this: it is your support that inspires that reporting, that web story, that broadcast report, the set of music and the list goes on.

The next time you hear us say we couldn’t do it without you, know that what we are really saying is you are our inspiration. Simply put, thank you for being our inspiration.

Warm Regards,

Neil
