NYC Holds Lottery For 1st Day Of Gay Weddings

STEVE INSKEEP, host:

New York State's same-sex marriage law takes effect on Sunday. New York City officials have been overwhelmed with more than 1,700 applications from same-sex couples. City officials fear they won't be able to handle all those requests on one day, and they do not want couples waiting in long lines eventually to be turned away. So the city is holding a lottery. It would ensure that at least 764 couples will be able to get married on Sunday. And that number would set a record for the most marriages on a single day in New York City.
