New York State Assemblyman David Weprin has been chosen by local Democratic leaders to be their candidate to replace Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY), whose career imploded in a sexting scandal that forced him to resign from office.
As NY1 reports, the special election to replace Weiner is set for Sept. 13. The heavily Democratic district, though, may not exist after 2012. New York State is losing two seats in the House and the Weiner district is one that some lawmakers are eyeing for elimination.
NY1 says that "Weprin is not nearly as tech-savvy as Weiner and says he has never used Twitter, the social messaging site that got the former congressman in such trouble."
Possible Republican contenders include "Weiner's 2010 challenger Bob Turner and attorney Juan Reyes," the news station adds.
