Obama Campaign Tops Team Romney In August Fundraising

President Obama edged out Mitt Romney in the all-important quest for campaign cash in the crucial final weeks ahead of the Nov. 6 election.

The president and the Democratic National Committee raised $114 million last month, versus Romney and the Republican National Committee's take of $111 million.

It was the first time in four months the Democrats had out-fundraised their opponents. Even so, as The Wall Street Journal points out, "pro-Romney super political action committees, which can collect unlimited checks, are swamping pro-Obama outside groups."

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said the money on his side was raised from 1.1 million donors, who gave an average of $58 in August.

"The key to fighting back against the special interests writing limitless checks to support Mitt Romney is growing our donor base, and we did substantially in the month of August," Messina said in a statement, calling the 2012 Obama campaign "the largest grass-roots campaign in history."

According to The Los Angeles Times, the Romney campaign "did not release its total number of contributors, but did say that more than 820,000 donations received were in increments of $250 or less."
