President Obama will visit a southwest Denver high school later today to promote his jobs bill which includes millions of dollars for fixing up and modernizing schools across the country. The visit caps off a three-day swing through western states that the President carried in 2008.President Obama carried Colorado handily in 2008, but most analysts are predicting a much tougher go next year. The President will speak at Abraham Lincoln High School in predominately Latino southwest Denver.
Paul Lopez, who represents much of the area on the Denver City Council, says it’s been one of the hardest hit communities in the state during the economic downturn.
"I think it’s fitting that the president of the United States visits one of the hardest impacted communities in the whole state," Lopez says.
The President will promote his jobs bill and address how its provisions aimed at modernizing schools could create jobs in areas like southwest Denver. Republicans have already blasted the visit, saying the jobs bill and provisions in it stripping tax breaks for oil companies will lead to a loss in jobs in the state.
