Senate President Shaffer To Challenge 4th CD Rep. Gardner

State Senator Brandon Shaffer says he'll remain president of the chamber while he challenges freshman Republican Congressman Cory Gardner next year.

The Democratic candidate from Longmont is calling for “Colorado solutions” to jolt Washington’s current gridlock over raising the nation’s debt ceiling into action.

“We need to focus on what is right, not who is right and get some things done,” he said. “Washington D.C. is currently in the grips of very partisan spin doctors who are trying to insert their personal egos into the process.”

Shaffer also criticized Gardner’s support of a GOP budget proposal that would revamp Medicare.

Both Shaffer and Gardner were law school classmates at the University of Colorado. On Tuesday Republicans released a response blasting Shaffer’s tenure in the Colorado Senate which began in 2004. Gardner’s office did not put out a statement.
