Senator Bennet to Chair Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee

Roughly a month after being offered the job by Majority Leader Harry Reid, Colorado Senator Michael Bennet says he will chair the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

This marks the first time in more than 20 years that a Senator from Colorado has been in a leadership position. But it could be risky for Bennet who’s positioned himself as a moderate since narrowly winning in 2010 against Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck.

“This new position puts him into a very partisan role, as someone clearly rooting for the Democrats and trying to ensure that the Democrats can defend 20 seats in 2014,” says Colorado Statesman Publisher Jody Hope Strogoff.

One of those seats belongs to Colorado’s senior Senator, Mark Udall.

Bennet will still have his Senate duties while serving his two-year term as committee chair. Washington Senator Patty Murray previously held the position.
