On Taxes: 'Republicans Are Getting What They Want'

All signs are pointing to an agreement between the White House and leaders in Congress that Bush-era tax cuts will be extended for everyone at year's end, while unemployment benefits for those who've been out of work for extended periods of time will also be reinstated.

President Obama and many of his fellow Democrats had been, of course, insisting that the tax cuts -- which are set to expire at year's end -- should not be extended for the nation's wealthiest taxpayers.

Word of a looming deal, Politico says, "is generating some grumbling from Democrats." They're upset, as NPR's Cokie Roberts said earlier on Morning Edition, because the outlines of the deal make it look as if "Republicans are getting what they want."
