Think Belgrade Isn't A Source Of The Blues? Check Out Ana Popovic

-1_Ev5J79U

Ana Popovic may not have been raised in a traditional center of the Blues, but having come from Serbia, she has reason to know something about what it means to have the Blues. Whether it is her experience or her father's extensive collection of Blues records, she has figured out how to proficiently and powerfully crank out the Blues… and she certainly has the talent to do it.

In Ana Popovic's childhood home in Belgrade there was lots of music. Her guitarist/bass player father hosting jam sessions pretty much nightly. Between sessions Popovic listened avidly to her father's extensive Blues collection. At age 15 she took up guitar. While she studied Graphic Design in school, the guitar took up more and more of her passion.

At 19, she formed the band Hush, At first, she was second guitarist, but with her prodigious skill and talent she quickly moved out front. Not only can she play great Blues, she has a very powerful voice. Hush played frequently in the Belgrade area and moved on to festivals in Greece and Hungary after the fall of communism.

Soon venturing beyond Serbia, Ana Popovic moved the Netherlands and formed a Dutch band which had some success culminating in a trip to Memphis to record her first album which led to her being featured on a Jimmi Hendryx tribute album that featured many Blues and Rock greats. That led her to join the Jimmi Hendryx Tribute tour of Europe in 2002. The result was three blues Awards in France: 'Best Singer', 'Best Guitarist' and Best Album' and a follow up tour of the USA.

The following few years have resulted in way too many successes to be thoroughly related here. So instead I'll just mention 9 solo albums, a nomination for a Blues Music Award as 'Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year' and an appearance at the 2013 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

I'll also pass along my feelings that Ana Popovic has a rare talent with a massive capability to play Blues guitar and a voice with power enough to rate comparisons with some of the greats. Seeing her live is a truly exciting event. Listening to her I expect much more in the way of awards and other accomplishments still to come… plus some really great Blues.
