Tourism Dept Up For Budget Increase

Tourism officials from across Colorado are meeting with lawmakers at the state capitol Tuesday. Governor John Hickenlooper has endorsed expanding the Colorado tourism budget to $15 million which would amount to a $2 million increase in funding this year.

Al White, the director of the tourism office says a portion of the money would go toward rebranding the state’s image.

“The Governor’s initiative to put a rebranding on Colorado to make Colorado recognized as not only a tourist and recreation destination but also a business and commerce destination.”

The funding increase will need to be approved by a state joint budget committee. Final tourism figures for 2012 are not in yet, but White says despite the busy summer wildfire season he expects revenue will be higher than the 2011 figure of $16 billion.
