The University of Colorado met a major fundraising milestone Thursday, announcing more than 1.5 billion in private support for CU’s four statewide campuses.

More than 158,000 donors have made gifts since the start of CU’s Creating Futures campaign in 2006 including some big names like furniture seller Jake Jabs and the Anschutz foundation.

“Donors have made CU a better place for students, faculty, alumni and friends,” said CU President Bruce Benson. “Today, we celebrate the success of the Creating Futures campaign and say ‘thank you’ to all the donors who have fueled that success.”

A statement released by the university says this has been the most successful fundraising campaign in CU’s 137-year history. The university says it will continue to search out and increase viable resources for revenue as continuing threats to state funding arise.

“As long as society has burning questions that remain to be answered, new frontiers that remain to be explored, we must continue to push hard for greater capacity in everything we do,” said CU’s Vice President of Advancement Kelly Cronin, who came to the university in September. “Today we celebrate the passions of our donors and the efforts of our faculty and staff, and look ahead to a future in which generous donors continue to better equip CU to educate, innovate, and foster positive change.”

$5.5 million was also given by an anonymous donor, the largest cash gift in the university’s history, to support scholarships and financial aid.
