Vestas Ramps Up Production; Plans To Hire

Vestas has signed a two-year agreement to supply towers for several wind power projects. As a result, more than 100 workers will be hired on at the Vestas' tower plant in Pueblo.

Over the last year, the Danish wind turbine manufacture made several rounds of layoffs and reduced hours at its facilities across Colorado. Vestas reduced its Colorado workforce last year from 1,800 to 1,100 workers.

Company officials said the cuts were caused by Congress’ delay to renew a federal wind production tax credit that was set to expire at the end of 2012.

Congress ended up extending the tax credit as part of a larger deal to avert the so called Fiscal Cliff . Tony Knopp, Vice President of Vestas Towers America, Inc., says the extension played a signigicant role in securing this new work contract.

Vestas’ say the agreement to supply towers for third parties aligns with the company’s plan to create a more scalable business to adapt to the uncertainty of the wind industry market.
