It appears that when soldiers loyal to Alassane Ouattara, the internationally recognized president of Ivory Coast, captured strongman Laurent Gbagbo on Monday, they did what they could to protect him against possible retaliation from the people he had ruled.
As you can see in this "raw video" posted by The Associated Press, they put Gbagbo in a helmet and protective vest before taking him outside to a waiting vehicle.
Gbagbo's capture ended a violent standoff that had gone on since last November's voting in Ivory Coast and Gbagbo's subsequent refusal to concede power to Ouattara.
NPR's Ofeibea Quist-Arcton reports today that Ouattara "has cut short speculation that Gbagbo would be handed over to the International Criminal Court in The Hague to face possible war crimes charges. Instead, he has called for an Ivorian investigation into the actions of the former president, his wife and his entourage."
Ouattara has also appealed to his supporters to refrain from revenge attacks on those who supported Gbagbo, Ofeibea says.
