Jim Hill

Former lead of 90s avante-garde rockers Soul Coughing, Mike Doughty has a quick wit, a dry sense of humor and a great knack for writing some very catchy songs.

"Circles" was Soul Coughing's biggest hit, peaking at number 8 on the alternative charts. Here, the overdubs and synths of the original found on 1998's El Oso are stripped away for one man and his guitar.

You'll find more of that sense of stripping and reworking on Doughty's latest Circles Super Bon BonAs Doughty told Weekend Edition Sunday, he's revisiting his Soul Coughing days - remaking those songs to make them sound the way he wanted if he had had full creative control of the group.

Recorded Oct. 29, 2013 at eTown Hall Studios, Boulder, Colo.
