Wis. Gov. Escalates Budget Battle With Democrats

STEVE INSKEEP, Host:

NPR's business news starts with the showdown in Wisconsin.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

INSKEEP: Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker says he will issue layoff notices to state workers today if no Democratic state senators return to vote on his proposal to balance the state's budget. Democrats in the State Senate fled to neighboring Illinois so they would not have to vote on that controversial bill. They've been out for weeks now. The bill would make state workers pay more for their benefits, and of political significance, it would take away most of their collective bargaining rights. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
