A lot of young kids respond to the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” with one of several stock answers: president, astronaut, nurse, princess.  That kind of thinking wasn’t pushed on the eight children of Henry and Emma Salazar, but the southern Colorado couple still managed to produce two federal lawmakers: Senator Ken Salazar and Congressman John Salazar.  KUNC’s Katie Goetz checked in with the family’s 85-year-old matriarch to learn more about Salazar family values.

In September we featured University of Colorado Physicist and Nobel Laureate Eric Cornell and how his attitude towards life may outweigh his triumphs in the laboratory.

Mark Paigen founded Chaco Inc. in his garage 18 years ago. The company has grown in that time and now sells its footwear across the globe, but they’ve remained in the small western Colorado town of Paonia. In addition to making footwear Paigen and the employees of Chaco Inc. take time to help out communities locally and globally and are dedicated to helping protect the environment. For August’s Colorado Profiles KUNC’s Deanna Garcia chats with Chaco Inc. founder Mark Paigen as well as other Chaco employees about what makes the company stand out and what makes it uniquely Coloradoan.
