April In-tune

From the General Manger

Dear Friends,

This coming week marks two critical events for KUNC.

Monday is Cyber Day, an encouragement for members to renew through our website, kunc.org, before the Spring On-Air Membership Drive. The goal is to raise $20,000. Cyber Day benefits the station in several ways:
  • Most importantly, the dollars raised help pay for the programming heard on KUNC.
  • Paying a pledge online saves paper and money at the station.
  • It allows the On-Air Drive to focus on encouraging listeners to join with a new membership.
And, there will be a very special premium for a sustaining membership of only $15 a month!

The second event is the On-Air Membership Drive that begins on Thursday, April 24, and ends on Wednesday, April 30. KUNC fundraises on-air only 17 days a year, and the next drive won’t take place for five and a half months. This is the last on-air drive for this fiscal year.

If you like short membership drives and appreciate the quality of the programming on KUNC, please consider a pledge on Cyber Day or during the On-Air Membership Drive.

Thanks,

Neil

Award-winning Reporter

Larson was awarded Best Feature in the Hard News category for his report Yours, Mine, and Uranium on a proposed uranium mine in Weld County. It’s the second regional Murrow award for Larson, who won last year in the Best News Series category for his reports on Avian Flu and Colorado.

The RTNDA received 3,459 regional entries. Judges gave awards in 14 categories, including overall excellence, spot news, continuing coverage, and investigative reporting, among others.

Regional winners automatically become eligible for the national awards competition, which will be judged in early June. More information on the RTNDA award winners is available here.

Larson also received a second-place award from the Colorado Broadcasters Association in the Best Single Event News Coverage Category for a 2007 story about declining numbers of young hunters in Colorado. The award was issued in the major market category in which KUNC competed against other radio stations from Greeley, Fort Collins, Loveland, Longmont,Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and Grand Junction.

Each year, over 7,000 participants enjoy the main stage concerts, after-hours sessions, daytime performances, and the many educational workshop sessions.

etown

etown Greeley

KUNC welcomes etown back to northern Colorado, for the show’s first-ever live taping in Greeley, at the Union Colony Civic Center. Join us for an evening of music and conversation with singer Kathy Mattea and bluesman Johnny Long, Wednesday, April 30 at 7 p.m.

Mattea’s appearance coincides with the release of her powerful new record, 'Coal', which sees her returning to her West Virginia roots to produce a mesmerizing collection of mining songs.

It has been said of Long, he is a 100 percent pure, dyed-in-the-wool, no-BS bluesman for life. He was born, raised and bred on the blues. It's not a 'career choice' for Long, not just a type of music he plays, or something he happened to be influenced by at some point. He's not a blues player, he's a Bluesman, with a capital B.

Listen Monday, April 28, at 5:35 and 7:35 a.m. during Morning Edition and 3:44 p.m. during All Things Considered.
