Lawmakers peppered Governor John Hickenlooper with economic development questions on Thursday when he presented his budget for next year. The legislature’s bi-partisan joint budget committee is charged with crafting a budget. Similar to recent years, the budget will require significant cuts to government programs. The Governor has also set aside 6 million dollars for economic incentives. KUNC’s state capitol reporter Bente Birkeland has more.
Governor John Hickenlooper released his 2012 budget today. It includes further cuts to higher education and K-12 schools, although not as deep as in the current budget. It also spares state workers from additional furloughs and does not call for any prison closures.
Outside the state capitol, the standoff between anti-Wall Street protesters and Colorado authorities has taken yet another turn. Governor John Hickenlooper said Thursday the Occupy Denver protesters cannot continue camping in the state-owned park overnight. But it’s still unclear whether authorities will start forcefully removing protesters as early as tonight.
