Greeley Injection Well Possibly Linked To Quakes, Regulators Require Changes

The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission is requiring operators of a Weld County injection well to alter how wastewater is disposed of in that well, saying they believe the well may be linked to recent earthquakes in the area.

COGCC's Lepore: No 'Causative Determination' Yet On Second Greeley Quake

One of the seismometers placed by a team from the University of Colorado following a quake at the end of May. The network detected a 2.6 magnitude event June 23, prompting regulators to halt activity at a nearby injection well.

The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has ordered a 20 day halt to wastewater injection at a well near the Greeley/Weld County airport. The order follows a second earthquake in the Greeley area, a 2.6 magnitude event June 23.

After a 3.4 magnitude earthquake hit Saturday evening near the northeastern Colorado town of Greeley, questions about its connection to oil and gas development started popping up on social media and in the blogosphere, with anti-fracking activists trying to make a link between the two.
