Sept. 11 Anniversary

  • On the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the nation paused to remember. Ceremonies took place at memorials in New York City; in Shanksville, Pa.; and at the Pentagon.
  • As the 20th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, Colorado Edition's Erin O’Toole spoke with KUNC news director Brian Larson about his experience covering commemoration events in the first few years after the attack.
  • Since 2009, thousands of participants have made their way up and down the steps during the Red Rocks Amphitheater 9/11 memorial stair climb to honor the firefighters who lost their lives at the World Trade Center. But that climb is not the only one in Colorado, nor is it the first.
  • In the months following the Sept. 11 attacks, several steel beams from the World Trade Center were sent to the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Maryland and Colorado for testing to better understand why the towers came down. Nineteen years ago, not long before the first anniversary of 9/11 in 2002, KUNC's Brian Larson visited NIST's Boulder facility to hear from the engineers tasked with testing the steel.
  • President Obama marked the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with visits to the Pentagon and Walter Reed on Tuesday. The attack 11 years ago fundamentally restricted the American debate on national security and foreign policy. Those issues traditionally advantaged Republicans, but they've proven to be real assets for the president.
  • As the tallest building in New York City rises at the World Trade Center site, the total cost of the rebuilding project is also climbing fast. An audit of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees the project, found the cost has grown to a whopping $14.8 billion dollars. A museum commemorating the victims of the 9/11 attacks was scheduled to open this month. Construction was delayed because of a fight over money, but an agreement last night could pave the way for construction to resume.
  • The 11th anniversary of the attacks is being observed with a moment of silence and speeches by President Obama at the Pentagon and by Vice President Joe Biden at Shanksville.
  • President Obama will mark the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks with a moment of silence on the South Lawn of the White House.
  • The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, were felt not only on a global scale, but also at a local level. KUNC’s Erin O’Toole talks with Boulder…
  • New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is banning clergy-led prayer at this weekend's events marking the tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The mayor's office says he wants to avoid disagreements over which religious leaders participate. Some religious groups are calling the ban a sign of prejudice against religion.
