Another Colorado resort has fired up its snowmaking equipment. Loveland Ski Area took advantage of cold temperatures and began making snow during the early morning hours Thursday.
Business leaders and town officials in Estes Park want to build a $50-million dollar, year-round ski area that includes restoration of the historic Elkhorn Lodge and the building of a performing arts center. A powerful winter storm that dumped up to two feet on some Colorado ski areas has skiers and snow boarders smiling, and resort officials breathing a sigh of relief.
Colorado’s snowpack is nearing the lowest it’s been in decades. The mild winter is bad news for powder skiers and snow-dependent businesses in the state. It’s also a concern for millions of people across the Southwest who depend on melting snow for their drinking water and farms.
