Colorado is experiencing its worst season for whooping cough in more than six decades.  Statewide 1,407 cases have been reported as of Dec. 8 - a number not seen since 1948.

State health officials are concerned about a growing pertussis epidemic in Colorado. To date, 1,026 cases of pertussis (commonly referred to as whooping cough) have been confirmed statewide.

To protect children against whooping cough, doctors recommend five shots of vaccine before they turn 7.

But what happens after that? How long does the protection last?
