Martin spoke out against Republican Governor Scott Walker's plan to limit bargaining rights for public employees. At the same time, she worked with the governor on an unsuccessful plan to split UW-Madison from the rest of the public university system. That was a plan to help cut costs. A plan to give school more autonomy from state rules met with resistance from other university administrators, and now Carolyn Martin is going on to become president of Amherst College in Massachusetts.
