A Longmont-based organization that works with Native American communities across the U.S. is one of several recipients of grant money from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The aim is to bolster economies in rural and underserved communities. First Nations Oweesta Corporation will coordinate with Community Development Financial Institutions that serve Native Americans in Idaho, California and Montana.

Jon Panamaroff, executive director of the organization, says the goal is to deliver financial literacy classes and entrepreneurial training.

“What we’ve done is taken normal financial literacy skill sets and brought it into a curriculum that speaks to our local tribal communities and speaks to the cultural aspects of what we’re trying to do," he says.

Yesterday’s announcement is part of a series of rural infrastructure investments expected by the USDA in the next two weeks.
