Late Thursday evening, the White House announced Governor John Hickenlooper's request for an expedited disaster declaration for fire ravaged counties has been approved.

The presidential 'major disaster declaration' will bring additional federal assistance to El Paso and Larimer Counties affected by the Waldo Canyon and High Park fires.

Hickenlooper says the he's pleased with the quick response to his request.

"This news, combined with President Obama's visit, makes clear that the whole country is with us in fighting these fires and recovering from their devastation. Brave fire fighters and emergency response workers are on the fire lines tonight in a number of our communities. We are grateful for all they are doing."

The major disaster declaration will provide the counties with federal dollars for a hazard mitigation grant program, crisis counseling, disaster unemployment assistance, and public assistance for emergency work.
