90 Days after Devastating High Park Fire, CSU Event Searching for Answers

The public will get a first-hand look at the scientific lessons and questions emerging from the High Park Fire this Monday.

The High Park Fire Symposium on the Colorado State University campus will feature first responders, those directing recovery efforts, and scientists like Tony Cheng, director of the Colorado Forest Restoration Institute.

Cheng will moderate a panel Monday at 6:30 looking at High Park restoration, action and recovery. This particular forum is specifically geared toward the public, and can connect the community with information and opportunities.

“We’ve been used to thinking about fires in the hundreds and thousands of acres, now we have to think of them in tens and hundreds of thousands of acres,” he said. “For me it’s a bit of a miracle that we haven’t seen more losses of property and life. And I think that’s a testament to the professionalism of the fire community.”

Cheng and other researchers have been collecting information to paint a picture of how fire has historically impacted forests along the Front Range. They hope that data will inform futuremanagement decisions.

The event, which is free and open to the public, kicks off at 9 a.m. at the Lory Student Center Theatre on the Colorado State University Campus in Fort Collins.
