From Neil Best's Desk
It might seem trite to use thankfulness as a theme for a message to all of you the week of Thanksgiving, but I don’t feel that way. Thanksgiving is my favorite of all the holidays. In many ways, it is low key. Not overly commercialized. It means less than 30 days before the days start getting longer (important to me!).
Yes, 2020 has been a train wreck in so many ways. I certainly don’t want to minimize the dreadful impact of the pandemic on the lives of so many. Nor the challenges of racial injustice. Or of the deeply divided approach to politics we have all experienced.
Still, I will take a few moments of your time to offer thanks.
First, my thanks to you. Your membership of the station during these troubling times is inspiring beyond words. From listeners who have been members for more than 40 years to those who joined the station last month. Thank you. In a time when so much of journalism is struggling to survive, your belief in what we do is an inspiration.
My second note of thanks goes to the staff. Every day, when you turn on the radio, smart speaker, or go on-line to listen, the staff at KUNC and NPR have been at work to keep us all informed. Not just with the serious and sometimes heartbreaking news, but as the name All Things Considered says, to consider all things. Like many of you, it hasn’t been easy to work remotely. Like others of you, our reporting staff can’t always work from the safety of home. The listening and reading we do on a daily basis is a reminder of the dedication of the reporters, producers, editors, and support staff that ensure we are here as a service to the community every day.
There is so much more to be thankful for, but please indulge me as I end with a personal note. This summer it was announced that I will be retiring. There will be an update on that in the next few weeks, but for now, my thanks to the hundreds of you who took time out of your busy schedules during this stressful time to send me personal notes, call me, and to offer encouragement. It is the first time I will have quit a job in more than 47 years and your support means more than I can possibly put into words.
Stay safe and be well,
