The much anticipated Trader Joe’s grocery store coming to Boulder next year will be missing one of its best known products, “Two-Buck Chuck.” Fans of the chain’s bargain-priced wines will still be able to purchase it at the Trader Joe’s retail location planned for Denver. "Two-Buck Chuck" refers to the chain's selection of discount wines that mostly sell for about $3.99.
The single point of sale of “Two-Buck Chuck” is a result of Colorado’s liquor laws. Chains and independent grocery stores are only able to apply for one license to sell full-strength liquor in the state of Colorado. And the chain has announced it will use its one available Colorado liquor license to open a wine store adjacent to its newly announced Denver location.
Trader Joe's announced Wednesday that it would open a 14,000-square-foot grocery store and adjoining 3,740-square-foot wine shop at Eighth Avenue and Colorado Boulevard in Denver next year.
The chain also unveiled plans back in February to build a 14,000-square-foot Boulder location at 1906 28th St. on the north end of the Twenty Ninth Street shopping district. That location is also scheduled to open in 2013.
