Fort Collins Group Wants Voters To Decide Fracking Moratorium

Citizens for a Healthy Fort Collins

Fort Collins could join a growing list of communities along the Front Range where voters are deciding at the ballot box whether to limit or ban hydraulic fracturing — or fracking.

The group Citizens for a Healthy Fort Collins handed in 8,052 signatures Monday in an attempt to get a 5-year moratorium placed on the November ballot.

“There’s definitely a citizen's movement afoot,” said campaign organizer Kelly Giddens. “As far as Fort Collins goes, this represents a resounding show of support from the families of Fort Collins who want to protect their public health, safety and property values.”

The Fort Collins city clerk has five business days to verify the signatures. City of Fort Collins council members passed a ban last spring, but then relaxed the rules so the only operating oil and gas company in the city could resume operations.

If the initiative moves forward, the city will join Lafayette, Loveland and Broomfield — all of which have ballot measures seeking to limit or ban fracking this fall.
